Julius Becton, Army general who led FEMA and D.C. schools, dies at 97
Gen. Julius Becton was a highly accomplished and respected Army general who later served as head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and D.C. public schools.
He was the first Black officer to lead the Army's largest basic-training program and the first Black commander of an Army corps.
Gen. Becton was a mentor and inspiration to others, including Colin Powell, who credited him with helping him in his career. [ more ]
